Ryan Jack’s injury may present international opportunity to Celtic’s David Turnbull

David Turnbull could be set for a Scotland call up after there was a call off from the side ahead of the World Cup qualifiers. Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack was forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad due to a calf issue, meaning Steve Clarke may be forced to call upon a new addition to the squad to face Israel, Austria and The Faroe Islands. One suitable replacement could be one of Celtic’s star players, David Turnbull.

In a season that has been so disappointing, Turnbull has delivered flare with his midfield performances, scoring eight and assisting six so far this season. Celtic quartet Jack Hendry (on loan at Oostende) Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and Greg Taylor have all been selected to play with the national team so hopefully Turnbull is called upon by Clarke.

Clarke suggested that there will be a future for Turnbull under the former Chelsea defender for Scotland, he just needs to bide his time. This timeline may have been brought forward as Jack’s spell on the sidelines is confirmed.

“Midfield is a really strong area. David is a good player. Got into the Celtic team. He’s doing really well and is one for the future and one to keep an eye on.”

Whilst there is no confirmation of Turnbull’s call-up, the move would help integrate him into the squad ahead of the summer. Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour has also been touted as an alternative to Turnbull, however, he hasn’t played much under Thomas Tuchel.
