Celtic on this Day in 1982 played Rangers in the final of the League Cup at Hampden. In those days there was no roof on the Celtic end and it rained all day leaving the Celtic support soaked to the skin but still happy enough singing in the rain…
4 December 1982
42 years ago today, Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 to win the Scottish League Cup. Courtesy of Nicholas’ smart finish and Murdo’s absolute bullet into the top right hand corner in quick succession inside the first half, Celtic lifted the Scottish League Cup trophy for the first time since 1974 — an eight year horrible run in the competition.
Therefore, it was a first League Cup winners medal for every Celtic member of the squad except Danny McGrain.
McGrain lifted the Scottish League Cup that day as skipper for the one and only time. A sparse crowd of 55,000 was hampered by the fact the North enclosure at Hampden was shut due to the reconstruction of the entire North Stand. As always, Celtic supporters had been soaked on a dismal rainy day whilst standing with no cover at the King Park end
