St Johnstone v Celtic: Bobby Madden to referee Boxing Day clash

Bobby Madden will referee Celtic’s game against St Johnstone tomorrow afternoon. Celtic travel up the A9 looking to secure three points and go into their three-week break on a high after following up their League Cup success last week with a disappointing draw against St Mirren.

Madden, 43, will officiate between the clubs and will be assisted by Sean Carr and John McCrossan with Peter Stuart acting as Fourth Official.

Madden most recently oversaw Celtic’s 1-0 win over Hearts, where he was criticised for allowing some of the rash tackles on Celtic players to go unpunished. The standard of refereeing has been criticised this year with increased calls for VAR to be introduced to help cut out mistakes and spot errors.

The games on Boxing Day are usually a special occasion in the Scottish footballing calendar but after the recent Scottish Government announcement, just 500 supporters will be present in Perth. As a result of this latest curb to football fans, ten out of twelve clubs voted to bring forward the Winter Break to the 27th, meaning fixtures would go ahead on Boxing Day – albeit with limited numbers in grounds.
