Stats show how fine Celtic’s lead at the top of the Premiership is

You might think that over the course of the season there will be multiple different things that will eventually separate teams in the table.

Obviously the season doesn’t end today, but if it did then Celtic would win the league on the tightest of margins. They currently sit top on goal difference, but it becomes fairly extraordinary when you look further into it.

Celtic currently have the same number of points, wins, draws, losses and goals conceded as the Rangers so, so it’s their advantage of one extra goal scored that keeps them top for now.

If you look into the stats on the SPFL website, it becomes even more incredible when you look at the amount of shots between the times. It current shows Celtic have taken 253 shots compared to the 252 from their closest challengers.

You can start to over analyse things and single out one specific shot that led to nothing, but it’s not a huge leap to say there’s literally one shot separating the two sides right now.

Jullien celebrates during the win at Ibrox

The upcoming Betfred Cup final should give us a huge indication over how the rest of the season will go. For as much as the Rangers are neck and neck with Celtic in a statistical sense, Neil Lennon’s men completely dominated the game at Ibrox and were well worth their win.

If Celtic can triumph again on Sunday, it will place a huge seed of doubt in the mind of Steven Gerrard and his team. It’s all well and good beating the other teams in the league, but if they want to win anything they need to show they can actually beat Celtic when it matters most.
