Steven Pressley believes the Rangers will beat Celtic to the Premiership title

Steven Pressley is one of those rare players who has had the opportunity to play for both Celtic and the Rangers. And after watching Sundays’s Glasgow Derby where Steven Gerrard’s side completely outplayed the Hoops, Pressley is convinced that the Rangers will end Celtic’s dominance over the Premiership this season.

Sunday’s loss was certainly a wake up call for Neil Lennon’s men. The warning signs where there earlier in the month when the two sides met at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup final. But a brilliant performance from Fraser Forster made sure that Celtic won their tenth straight domestic title on that day. And the terrible performance on the day was forgotten in the midst of the celebrations. There is no forgetting now though after the Rangers beat them in their own backyard after almost a decade.

Pressley believes that this recent win will give the psychological edge to Steven Gerrard’s men for the rest of the season. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

“Sunday was a massive psychological boost for Rangers.

“I go back to Hearts in 2005/06 and we had a top of the table clash with Celtic at Tynecastle over the festive period – we were 2-0 up but lost the game 3-2 and that was a huge psychological advantage to Celtic winning at our ground.

“We could have gone to within a point of them that day at a key time of the season but Celtic kicked on and I don’t think we ever recovered.

“That’s why I think Sunday was such a huge result for Rangers.

“They are now in position but the acid test will be if they can sustain it.

“I actually think Rangers will win the league. Although they are a high pressure team they also carry a really good physical presence and that’s really important on the road in Scotland.

“They can deal with what people throw at them this season and I think they are equipped to win both ways.”

Right now, it is apparent that Celtic do need to bring in some quality players in January if they are to stop Steven Gerrard’s side from running away with the title. The Rangers have looked the much better side the last two times they have played each other and Celtic cannot afford to let that happen in a season when they are aiming to win a record-equaling ninth straight league title.
