The Charlie Nicholas mistake that Ben Doak could be about to repeat

On this day in 1981, Celtic really turned on the style with a 7-0 thumping of hapless St.Mirren at Celtic Park. The football was consistently scintillating, and even more good news was given to the Celtic fans when both Aberdeen and Rangers, the main challengers for the title, lost ground that day to Kilmarnock and Hearts respectively.

Frank McGarvey scored a hat-trick, George McCluskey scored two and Roy Aitken and Charlie Nicholas scored one each. Frank’s second goal just before the interval was a thing of beauty and a worthy candidate for Goal of the Season. His reaction at half time was to be sick in the toilet! This goal really was a thing of beauty, one of the best individual goals ever scored at Celtic Park.

Roy Aitken had opened the flood-gates early in the match then after that is was all about the incredible firepower that was in this Celtic side with McGarvey at the centre of everything, the strength and composure of George McCluskey and the legend in the making – the best young Celtic player since Kenny Dalglish – now making his mark.

Sadly it was not to be for Charlie Nicholas though, worth noting on a day when another promising young Celt, Ben Doak has apparently decided against signing a professional contract for Celtic in favour of a move to Liverpool. He’ll be remembered for his two substitute appearances against Dundee Utd and theRangers – thanks to Ange Postecoglou – and might end up looking back on those games as his career highlights. Best of luck to the lad, regardless.

The Celtic team on this day in 1981 which thrashed St Mirren 7-0 was pretty special…Bonner, McGrain, Reid, Sullivan, McAdam, Aitken, Provan, Conroy (MacLeod), McGarvey, Burns, Nicholas (McCluskey).

In the days when fans could pick and choose when to attend just 18,000 were there at Parkhead on that Saturday afternoon. An incredibly small crowd and much smaller that that team deserved.
