“They will not be there next season” – Celtic legend expects these four players to depart this summer

There’s obviously going to be a major overhaul at Celtic this summer, so it makes sense to look at the future of the four loanees at the club just now.

Jonjoe Kenny has looked like a solid addition and he’s not let anyone down, but if it’s going to take a Premier League transfer fee and wage packet to make it permanent then it would be better investing that money elsewhere.

It’s easy to reach a similar judgement with Mohamed Elyounoussi as it’s likely that Southampton will want a lot of money to let him go, but it’s a harder decision to make.

He’s produced some brilliant moments and when he’s on form then he’s one of the best players in the league, but injuries are a worry and if he’s not feeling confident then he easily goes missing in games.

Diego Laxalt does split opinion among the fans as there’s a lot to like about his game, but he can be a headless chicken at times and it’s the last thing you need when the defence is struggling and leaking goals.

Again it’s probably going to take a big fee to convince AC Milan to sell, so it’s a case of feeling that the money could be better invested in other players.

It’s easier to make the decision on Shane Duffy as he’s struggled for too long and other teams feel like they can get something against him, so he needs to find a new club and rebuild his reputation.

It means that it’s easy to see a situation where all four players return to their parent clubs, and Frank McAvennie made a similar assessment when he spoke to Football Insider about the squad:

I know there is four players on loan and I expect them all to go back. Kenny, Laxalt, Duffy and Elyounoussi – they will go back. They will not be there next season.”

You do have to wonder if Kenny and Elyounoussi could be kept on if it’s possible to strike another loan agreement and the new manager likes them, but perhaps it will be best to start with a totally clean slate and put their wage money towards new signings instead.
