Worrying signs for Celtic as punters pile on newly available club legend as their next manager

Betting markets are easily spooked, so it’s often hard to tell if a dramatic shifting of the odds is down to some inside knowledge or merely lots of bets being placed and driving the price down.

A report from Glasgow Live has indicated that a lot of bets are currently being placed on Paul Lambert to become the next Celtic boss, to the point that the odds have tumbled from around 33/1 to 5/1.

That’s a pretty dramatic shift, so it does make you wonder if Paul Lambert should be seen as a realistic contender for the job.

Obviously he’s got a lot of experience as a former player and captain so he’s going to know what the club is all about, but it does feel like it would be another Neil Lennon type appointment and we need to see the club going down a different path.

In fairness he does have a lot of experience as a manager when it comes to managing multiple clubs, but that’s not necessarily a good thing:

His early career was actually quite promising as he did some good things with Wycombe and Colchester, and that led to him getting the Norwich job where he had his best run as a boss.

He took them over after thumping them 7-1 on the opening day of the League One season with Colchester and he led them to back-to-back promotions to the Premier League, while he also managed to secure survival in the top flight before moving to Aston Villa.

His time at Villa was mediocre at best as he did manage to keep them up for a couple of seasons, but he was sacked in the third season with an overall win percentage of less than 30% and the club facing relegation.

He didn’t see much success after that as 15th placed finishes with Blackburn and then Wolves ensured he only lasted one year, while he then led Stoke and Ipswich to relegation and he left Ipswich last week after a dismal season that leaves them scrambling for a play-off place at best.

There’s not a lot in there that fills you with confidence if he were to get the job, so hopefully these tumbling odds are just misplaced hunches from punters and not anything more serious.
