Transfer Latest: Celtic looking at AZ winger Albert Gudmundsson

Celtic have been linked with a move for AZ Alkmaar winger Albert Gudmundsson. The Icelandic wide man is a free agent come the summer and now a report in Holland has connected Celtic with a move for the versatile forward.

According to FCUpdate.nl, the player is considering leaving the Dutch club due to a lack of meaningful game time in the Eredivisie of late. Gudmundsson moved to AZ in 2018 from giants PSV, having previously came through the youth academy at SC Heerenveen and was a regular for Alkmaar until this season, prompting him to look at his options.

ALKMAAR, 26-08-2021, AFAS stadion, UEFA Europa League Play-offs Football, season 2021 / 2022, AZ – Celtic, during the match, referee Tiago Martins shows a yellow card to AZ player Albert Gudmundsson, final result 2-1 for AZ overall 2-3 for Celtic FC AZ

The 24 year-old can also play several positions across the front line, making him an ideal candidate for Ange Postecoglou and his playing system and style. Deployed at no.10, striker, and on either flank, it’s not hard to understand why teams may be interested in the Iceland international on a pre-contract agreement.

Having played for Iceland too, the player certainly has experience of the top level and would represent a low-risk move much like the reputed targeting of Yosuke Ideguchi from Gamba Osaka in Japan. The report also states that our main rivals are looking at launching a play for the young winger, which could have some substance since their new manager had a spell in Holland a couple of years back.

Overall, it looks like a good squad addition which would add depth in the forward areas going forward. With Mikey Johnston failing to impress since his lengthy lay-off too, there could be space for Gudmundsson in the Celtic roster come the summer or even in January.

WE’VE GOT SOMETHING TWICE AS GOOD…

Thanks to everyone who ordered Harry Hood – Twice as Good for Christmas presents. If you got an Ange jumper instead then why not order this brilliant book by Matt Corr, or indeed David Potter’s biography of another Celtic legend Alec McNair – born on this day incidentally – from Celtic Star Books or from the official Celtic stores?

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
