Lagerbielke has failed to establish himself in the Celtic side under Brendan Rodgers since arriving in the August in a transfer from IF Elfsborg. the 23 year-old signed a five year contract at Celtic and quickly was thrown into the deep-end playing at Ibrox alongside Liam Scales in a makeshift Celtic defence and keeping a clean sheet at Celtic won 1-0.

And in December Lagerbielke had the distinction of scoring the first winning goal for Celtic in a Champions League match for decade when he came off the bench at grabbed the winner in the closing stages of the match against Dutch Champions Feyenoord.

But these highlights apart, the Swedish defender has failed to break into the Celtic first team and the surprise package of the season at the club – the emergence of Liam Scales as a first team starter when it looked like he’d be sold in the summer – has played a part in the lack of game-time for Lagerbielke, who cost Celtic £3m.

Heading to Italy for an initial loan deal would seem to suit all parties with Brendan Rodgers seemingly well equipped in central defence with Scales, Carter-Vickers, Nawrocki and Welsh all ahead of Lagerbielke in the pecking order.

According to a report by Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Celtic will assist with the payment of the player’s wages while at Lecce and the Serie A club has an option to buy in the summer.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports as follows:

Lecce is about to close for a new defender: Gustaf Lagerbielke. As reported in recent weeks, there had already been a survey by the Giallorossi for the Celtic Swede. In fact, the final bureaucratic details are being sorted out and then the defender will be able to carry out the medical examinations and sign with Lecce. The operation should be concluded on loan with right of redemption. Additionally, Celtic will help pay part of the wages.

Born in 2000, he is a right-footed defender who also boasts two appearances in the Champions League this season with Celtic. D’Aversa, therefore, will have his new reinforcement in defense. He is a young player but has already made his debut with the senior Swedish national team.

  1. FFs if they cant afford his wages then they wont have the money to buy him , he won defender of the year in his previous league is on a five year deal , if we are having to pay his wages then he should be loaned to a Spfl club ( preferably Aberdeen as a sweetener for Miovski ), so we can see what he is capable of in the league we play in , going to Lecce will just see him back in six months and no progress made , Hail Hail .
