UEFA’s ‘Monday Motivation’ Green Brigade Gaffe

UEFA have been left looking a rather silly after their official UEFA Europa League account posted a photograph of the Celtic display from the Cluj game, which football’s governing body in Europe had fined Celtic for just last week. The Europa League tweet highlighted the Green Brigade’s display at the recent match against Cluj under the caption of Monday Motivation.

One twitter user screen grabbed the image, taken from twitter, depicting the Green Brigade’s Muhammed Ali tifo as Monday’s motivation. Undoubtedly someone from UEFA’s disciplinary department alerted them that they had in fact had hit Celtic with a £10,400 fine for setting off a flare just last week and promoting this message may be counterproductive.

This is the eighteenth time that the club has been fined since 2007 by Europe’s footballing governing body and shortly after the game, the club released a statement begging supporters to stop using the pyrotechnics as the risks outweigh the benefits.

UEFA rules dictate that the lighting of flares within stadiums is strictly prohibited and Celtic have said that the continued use of pyrotechnics will result in the fantastic reputation that the club’s support has being tarnished.

Celtic issued a statement after news broke of the latest UEFA charge and pleaded with fans to refrain from using flares and pyrotechnics with the implication being that a complete closure of the standing section at Celtic Park is getting closer for a European match.

Thursday night will see the visit of Lazio – who it has to be said have much more profound problems with their fans than Celtic have with UEFA – and Paradise is a 60,000 sell-out. Celtic want maximise backing from the supporters but hope that there are no flares or pyros this time round.
