Underwhelming Celtic managerial suggestions keep on coming after Chris Sutton claim

One of the more exciting parts of appointing a new manager is seeing some of the big names that will be linked, but there are so many underwhelming managers being linked to Celtic just now.

A look at the betting lists shows worrying names like Derek McInnes and Paul Lambert being in the frame, but someone like Alex Neil isn’t much better.

It’s been reported that Chris Sutton has mentioned him as a potential contender for the role, but there’s not much in here that gets you excited:

“Alex Neil is another one. He gets a bit of a bashing at times for the job he does at Preston but I don’t see them as a team with a budget up there with the teams who are going to push for promotion.

“They play a decent brand of football, he’s an organiser and knows the Scottish game.”

His Preston side are currently safe from relegation but too far away from the play-offs for it to be a realistic ambition, while you would expect any competent manager to have the ability to play nice football and organise his team.

Neil did do a good job with Hamilton and Norwich when it came to getting them promoted but he couldn’t keep them in the Premier League, and the job at Celtic requires a totally different mindset.

It’s been said a million times before but the job needs someone who is able to cope with the pressure of winning every week while also having the tactical flexibility to get results in Europe, so simply linking anyone who has a connection to the Scottish game isn’t going to be enough.

It’s still not clear what the plan is when it comes to appointing the new boss, but hopefully it’s going to be someone a bit more exciting that this.
