‘Unnecessary Transfer’, Lustig’s Belgian Move Earns Place in Flop XI

Mikael Lustig has landed an unwanted place in the Belgian league’s transfer flop of the season XI. The Belgian news website Voetbalnieuws has listed the 33-year-old on their flop XI of the season.

The ex-Celtic star, who won an incredible 16 trophies during his time in Glasgow left to join KAA Gent after Celtic let his contract rundown last summer.

“It’s maybe harsh on Lustig because he often played for Gent, especially in Europe.

“But after a flying start, with three assists in the league, he lost his place to Alessio Castro-Montes at right back. He was a free transfer so it wasn’t an expensive blunder, but he was a fairly unnecessary transfer.”

Celtic, meanwhile, have been spoiled for choice in terms of right back’s since Lustig left. Jeremie Frimpong’s emergence along with the signing of Hatem Abd Elhamed mean that Celtic are stocked up in that department. Even going as far as having a third choice in Moritz Bauer, the loanee from Stoke City.

Lustig will be fondly remembered for his time at Celtic and hopefully he can reclaim his space with Gent, after all he was a fine servant for the club.
