VAR’s lines for Jota offside goal sowing seeds of doubt amongst Celtic support

One of the main highlights or flashpoints, if you will, of the game tonight at Fir Park was the decision to award an offside for Jota’s stunning finish from a world-class Kyogo Furuhashi pass from midfield. The goal was up there with anything we’ve done this season and would have been for sure a contender for goal of the month if not the season.

It did look onside when you saw it in the normal run of play, with the Portuguese winger appearing to have timed his run to absolute perfection. But it was not to be as the linesman thought otherwise and decided that the silky playmaker had strayed into an offside position before the pass from his teammate was hit.

After the decision went to VAR, they relayed the message that it was indeed offside and as a result, Jota had to be penalised in the process. It was quite the disappointment as the whole passage of play was exceptional and deserved to stand as our second goal of the game.

The Motherwell TV channel did show the VAR offside line but it wasn’t from a great angle. Now folk have been having their say on Twitter, calling out the VAR team for suspicious looking lines on the Jota goal. There is already a suspicious view of the VAR technology being introduced in Scottish football, heightened further by the ineptitude of the officiating in this country.

Have a look at some of the reaction to that offside call…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Decisions like this and the many more seen and to come are the reason we never take our foot off their throats, build from a position of strength and keep adding to it

  2. We’ve had decisions like this for 135 years and now even with the latest technology they can still blatantly cheat but when we’re champions again come May we will know that we did it against the a lot more than the other teams in the league. Hail Hail

  3. Willie Collum is the biggest cheat in Scottish football. Every 50/50 challenge went to the Well. He just cannot live down he’s a religious teacher and he spends all his time showing his Klan mates he not a Tim.
He’s a total failure as a NEUTRAL, isn’t that what referees are. neutral…not Willie, he’s a cheat and a bigot.
Now they have found out how ro cheat more, with a line drawn round players to get them offside. The stinking NLRA – North Lanarkshire Referees Association, is leadind the way with bogus claims about Celts being offside. The smell reeks Collum, McLean, Madden, Dick-inson, and Beaton, all smellies with their fingers in the cash till. What a stink!
