Video: Celtic 5 Rangers 1 – Remembering sensational Dembele, the Senderos disaster and Joey Barton

Unfortunately the global health crisis means Celtic won’t have a chance to go 16 points clear at the top of the table this afternoon, so it’s time to remember some great moments from previous games.

It’s fair to say that the Rangers have had many false dawns since their liquidation in 2012, but the Mark Warburton side of 2016 will go down as a spectacular failure.

A lot of money was spent on some very average players from down south, Joey Barton was heralded (mostly by himself) as some kind of superstar while Philippe Senderos enjoyed a long spell with Arsenal.

In hindsight, their midfield three of Kranjcar, Barton and Windass was never going to come out well against Brown, Bitton and Rogic – as the great man put it after the game – “It was men against boys”:

There’s so much to enjoy about this game, but the perfect hat trick from Dembele and the sheer panic he managed to bring out of Senderos was a joy to see.

The thumping header from a corner is always enjoyable, but the second showed just how much class the Frenchman had. Firstly he runs away from Barton who either isn’t paying attention or doesn’t want to track a run, but then Senderos completely buys the dummy and sends himself flying out of the game, as the Frenchman simply picked his spot.

Then came the Senderos red card, as the mere presence of Dembele scared him into just slapping a ball away, before almost looking pleased as he sprinted off the pitch following the red card.

The third came after Barton – now filling in at centre back – was completely done by a cross to the back post and Dembele thundered a sweet left footed drive into the net to seal his hat-trick.

It was a game where the media tried to hype it up as the grand return of the Rangers, but really it just set the tone for years to come.
