Celtic and the latter stages of the European Cup went hand in hand in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The Hoops won the competition in 1967, lost in the final in extra-time in 1970, lost on penalties in the semi-final in 1972 and lost in the semi-final in 1974.
The Bhoys were up against it, when travelling to Switzerland for the first leg of the quarter final against Basel in 1974. Indeed, they came out of the game trailing 3-2 on aggregate after a disappointing defeat. Although, they had the comfort of two away goals.
Back in Glasgow, on this day (1974) the Hoops won a pulsating contest in extra-time. The 90 minutes had seen Celtic replicate Basel’s first leg victory, winning by a 3-2 scoreline. With the aggregate score tied at 5-5, extra-time ensued and it was Steve Murray who scored decisive goal to take Celtic through.
20th March 1974, Celtic beat FC Basel 4:2 at Celtic Park, 6:5 on aggregate.
