One of the greatest ever Celts, and a wonderful man, Billy McNeill tragically passed away on this date three years ago. Billy’s achievements as both player and manager need no explanation. He is iconic. Scottish football’s greatest ever captain and defender – the leader of the country’s greatest ever team and a history maker in European football.
Billy’s passing was a huge loss to many people, especially Celtic fans.
It was uncanny that in the first Celtic game after his death, the club’s number 5 Jozo Simunovic scored the winning goal in the 67th minute. As the Croatian centre half pointed to the sky, it appeared there was indeed a fairy tale about Celtic, as the great McNeill once famously said.
