The Scottish Champions are a good team, according to Greg Taylor. Most of the Celtic supporters reckon we’ve got a very good team but as Mike Maher points out this morning on The Celtic Star, emerging from the Group Stages of the Champions League to be involved in European football beyond Christmas has got to be a major target for this Celtic side.
And both Greg and Mike have come to the same conclusion, to get better Celtic needs some quality new additions to this summer, particularly with both Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton leaving the club after almost a decade each of distinguished service winning a grand total of 30 medals between them.
“I think we need that. We can’t rest on what we have achieved so far,” the Celtic left back stated as reported by Daily Record. “We have had a successful season, winning the double, but we need to progress next year. We want to be bigger and better and I think by bringing bodies that pushes everyone on again.
“It has been a new way of playing, but it has been one I’ve enjoyed learning. I continue to try and learn from it because we know as a team we are not the finished article yet.
“We are a good team. But we want to become a great one. Hopefully, over the next few months, we can do that.”
You probably don’t have to worry too much though because things appear to be different at Celtic in the days since Ange has been around. The best example of that was of course on Hogmanay when his three winter window signings from Japan – who were all rumoured to be coming throughout December – were actually announced in the hours ahead of the window opening and all duly signed, making their way to Glasgow to make a huge impact on the title run in.
Remember at that time we were sitting six points behind theRangers so Champions League football was an aspiration at that stage and the bookies were very much of the view that theRangers would be collecting their second consecutive title come May.
Now we’re in the summer and the window transfer business might just happen early doors and ahead of the players reporting back for pre-season training and heading over to Austria. In the past we’d have had the Peter Lawwell ‘last minute dot com’ approach to bargain hunting as the clock ticked down on the transfer market and by that time we’d have been unprepared for a qualifier against a side we would have taken care of had we been ready.
They used to call it prudence and they always had one or two cheerleaders trying to sell that caution to the Celtic support. Few bought into it.
Ange Postecoglou has made a name for himself in European football in one season at Celtic and he is not the kind of manager who is going to be messed about in that way by the Celtic Board. To be fair to Michael Nicholson he delivered on 1 January and has seen the benefits that early transfer business produced. Same again and neither Ange or the Celtic support will have much to complain about.
Automatic entry into the Champions League gives Celtic the chance to return to a £100m plus turn-over club, something that only ever happens when we make the Champions League group stages. Ange wants to make his mark on European football with his Celtic team. He must be backed.
This week we watched from the sidelines as theRangers got very close to winning a European trophy. The contrast with the Celtic chairman lecturing the small shareholders ie the supporters at the club’s last AGM about the impossible task of Celtic competing in European football is stark, that mindset must be binned once and for all and Celtic must get our act together on the European stage.
“We are a good team. But we want to become a great one,” is the message from Greg Taylor that ever Celtic fan supports. We just need the Celtic Board to buy into that aspiration now and that means fully backing Ange in the transfer market over the next few months.
In the window ahead I'd like a back up to Hart. A left back, another CH, 2 if CCV does not sign. A defensive midfield player, a winger if jota does not sign and a fox in the box striker, as we miss too many chances. We have the resources, let's use them @CelticFC HH
