Stephen Welsh has been linked with a January loan move to Belgian side KV Mechelen, and it’s an offer that the defender will be keen to make due to his lack of first team opportunities.

Brendan Rodgers is a known admirer of the defender who’s been at the club since he was a boy, but due to the form of Auston Trusty and Liam Scales he has seen his first team opportunities become restricted.

Welsh’s best interests

It would certainly be in the club and Welsh’s best interests if he takes the opportunity to kickstart his career at a decent level. The player himself would benefit from the experience, while the club could benefit financially from any potential permanent move.

It’s not just Welsh who could leave come January, his defensive teammate Maik Nawrocki could also depart the club either on loan or permanently, as the Pole is in the same boat regarding his first team chances.

Gustaf Lagerbielke is already out on loan, and he could well be followed by Welsh and Nawrocki. All three players are quite clearly not in Brendan’s plans, so any departures will most likely see the manager dip into the transfer market for a replacement.

  1. Would say rocki time is up within the club now, and would be allowed to leave without any fuss also.
Same could apply to Holm also, and with bernie, it’s only really about recouping as much of the initial outlay, in fees now?
Slightly different story regarding Welsh still exists though.
Welsh has jumped ahead of rocki currently in Rodgers selection options, even if only 4th choice CB at present?
Yet Rodgers is only allowed to make 3 changes, I believe, to his original 25man CL squad?
So with a few potential positions that could well do with strengthening, could we actually allow Welsh to leave, especially with the homegrown quota requirements?
Also monty seems to have joined Holm in the missing list also at present?
So could well be a number of possibilities to be assessed, before any commitments can be made regarding how we actually approach the overall January window?
Not so sure whether we will be in a position to let Welsh leave, especially as it could well be Dane Murray used as the replacement for Welsh, and maybe only 2 positions left to be strengthening in?
With another wide option as a priority now, this talk or Tierney returning, along with possibly another midfield option also?
Somehow don’t see allowing Welsh to leave, as being to high on our list at present imo?
