Xabi Alonso snubs Gladbach, what could it mean for Celtic target Jesse Marsch

Xabi Alonso has committed his future to Real Sociedad, just days after he was linked with a move to Borussia Monchengladbach to become the next manager of the Bundesliga team. This news will be a blow to Celtic, who reportedly have Jesse Marsch on their shortlist for the next manager. According to The Daily Mail, Marsch is on the Celtic board’s wishlist but this news will mean that Marsch will remain as one of the favourites to replace Marco Rose.

Rose will join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season and the frontrunner to replace Rose was the man that replaced him in Salzburg, Jesse Marsch. Alonso won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern and was reportedly being lined up to become the next Gladbach boss; however, he committed his future to Real Sociedad meaning that the Bundesliga gig its still open.

Marsch is reportedly on the shortlist for the job in Monchengladbach due to his successes in Austria.

Marsch insisted that his work at RB Salzburg is not done as the 47-year-old looks to complete another double success in Austria this season. However, Marsch might have catapulted himself into the favourite amongst the supporters for the role after he issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to Celtic when speaking to BBC.

“It’s an amazing club and it would be an honour to even be considered. But I also have a job to do here. My way of working is really to focus in on the job that I’m doing and concentrate on the moment. And the more that I do that the more other possibilities can arise.”

Celtic should pull out all the stops to entice him to the club as he is the standout candidate, as well as being relatively attainable at this moment in time. Marsch is highly rated and given he can speak German, he is expected to move into the Bundesliga but Celtic should do all they can to entice a manager of Marsch’s calibre.

  1. What a load of sh#te! Marsch is nothing more than a Daily Mail clickbait distraction. He is in no way suitable for the club, just a part of the Red Bull football factory and the exact opposite of what we need right now.
