“You’ve just bought a club to get yourself a job,” Ange doesn’t miss Open Goal

Si Ferry of Open Goal fame has managed to pick up some expert career advice as he moves into football management for the first time.

As we reported last week Ferry will manage Open Goal Broomhill FC – as they will now be known, after a tie up with the YouTube podcast with in excess of 100,000 subscribers – in the Lowland League next season. There, he will test his managerial wits against Celtic B and Tommy McIntyre, and the former Peterhead man has been offered some words of wisdom from Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Ferry was interviewing the Celtic boss last month, after Postecoglou collected yet another Manager of the month award, and co-host former Celt Paul Slane asked the Celtic boss for a bit of guidance in the new job for his podcast pal.

And the Celtic boss, perhaps in a veiled dig at being written off so early by the mainstream media this season, was keen to impart his belief that having a set of beliefs and refusing to be derailed from them, despite all the outside noise, was the key to success.

“Every day you’re gonna get challenged and everything you believe is about to change. I say that to every manager that starts their first job. From the first day you start, it’s gonna try and pull you away from what you believe in.”

“Inevitably people will say to you that it’s about the result, it’s about the win and then you fall into this rabbit hole of chasing something that you’re never gonna grab to be honest.

“You’re only going to be successful if you believe in something and the closer you stay to that for the whole course, the more likely you’ll have success and the more likely you’ll have a career.

“But what you should be thinking about is that you want to be doing it in 20 years so that when you’re my age, you’re still doing the same thing. That’s only going to happen if you have success along the way but also if you believe in something.

“I could be wrong but I read a statistic where guys who – and I don’t want to scare you – but guys who fail in their first job, 50 percent of them never get another opportunity. That first job is critical. And the reason I think that is is because most of them go into it and are like ‘I’ve got this job, and now I’m just going to win and that’s all that matters’ and eventually that just wears out mate.

“You’ve got to start with a belief about something, it evolves as you go along, and try to stick to it as close as possible. Be the person you wanna be.”

And Postecoglou didn’t fail to jokingly have a wee dig at Si Ferry for apparently buying a football club to get his shot at management. “I keep saying it’s not about getting a job – you’ve just bought a club to get yourself a job!”… A comment that left Si Ferry felt the need to clarify straight away by saying “I knew he would say that, I’ve got a job, I’m leaving that to do this.” and Ange to retort “It’s okay, it’s fine”.

Much like the answers Celtic Fan Media receive from the Celtic boss in comparison to those in the mainstream media, Ange Postecoglou always appears relaxed and open when interviewed by Open Goal, perhaps the fact it’s two Celtic supporters and former players asking the questions helps in that regard.

And I’ll bet if he ever needs advice as the Lowland League season progresses, Si Ferry will be able to call upon further words of advice from Ange Postecoglou. Not a bad contact to have for a manager starting out in the game!

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
