UEFA open proceedings against Celtic and AIK

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic and AIK following last Thursday’s Europa League Play-off match in Stockholm.

Celtic won the match 4-1 but there were off the field problem. There were incidents of crowd trouble during the half-time interval in the away section, with Celtic later claiming that the section had been infiltrated by Swedish ultras from AIK’s local rivals Hammarby.

Charges against Celtic relate to setting off fireworks and throwing objects while AIK charge have been charged with the stairways blocked offence.

The home side are lucky to have escaped a Racism charge after the Celtic TV Unique Angles video had to be pulled when listeners reported being clearly able to hear racist abuse directed towards some Celtic players by the home support.

There are numerous videos that seem to point to the trouble being started by overly aggressive Police and security staff, something that seems to be a feature in the Swedish game, according to some commentators.

Celtic can’t really do much about the flares – if they were set off by Celtic Fans but it will be interesting to see how the infiltration defence plays out.

Interesting too that this news is all over social media and news outlets straight away yet the first charge against the Rangers for fans racist and sectarian singing, seemed to go completely under the radar. Not a peep in any media outlet at all on that one which related to the Europa League qualifier against little St Joseph’s.
