Ajer’s Agony: “He has a broken eye socket,’ said Rodgers, and Gordon ‘won’t be fit for Scotland’

CRAIG GORDON is out of the Scotland squad to play Albania and Israel after picking up a few injuries in the 2-1 Europa League win over RB Leipzig at Celtic Park on Thursday night.

He was absent from the Celtic side that played at Livingston today, with Scott Bain standing in and securing a clean sheet in the goalless draw that pushed Celtic ahead of Hearts at the top of the table.

After the game today, Brendan Rodgers delivered the bad news to Alex McLeish and the Tartan Army.

“I don’t think he’ll be fit for Scotland,” the Celtic manager said.

“He did well to get through the game with his knee and then got an injury to his hip.

“We’ll assess him over the week but he won’t be fit for Scotland.”

A bigger concern to the Celtic support will be the injury suffered by Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer, after a clash of heads inside the Livingston penalty area. It looked bad at the time and the 20 year old was replaced by Filip Benkovic and the Celtic manager has now confirmed that is it indeed as bad as it looked.

“He has a broken eye socket, so it’s a really sore one and he’s in a lot of pain. He’s probably going to need surgery which is a shame for him,” Brendan said.

Ajer could be sidelined for a few months and with Celtic facing a tricky situation in the January window with bids likely to arrive for Dedryck Boyata and Benkovic’s loan deal possibly cut short depending on how their own window, goes, this is really working news for Rodgers and the Celtic support.

It also means that Ajer will miss the busy schedule of games that Celtic have between now and the winter break.
