BT Sport’s pundits Sutton and McCoist remember Bertie Auld

On BT Sport’s Friday Night Show, Chris Sutton and Ally McCoist regaled host Darrell Currie and the viewing audience with anecdotes about our very own Bertie Auld. Bertie’s passing has saw an outpouring of love and affection for the European Cup winner, with stories galore of his famous patter and outrageous sense of humour.

Ally McCoist was first up and told two stories about the Lisbon Lion. One was when Chic Charnley asked McCoist to help open his sister’s hair salon in Possil. He wanted a famous player from both sides of Glasgow’s big two. Bertie was on top form at the opening day unsurprisingly, flashing his European Cup winners medal in Ally’s face and saying ‘Ye huvnae got wan a these son, have ye?!’ Fair to say McCosit was roasted good and proper that day!

The other story from McCoist was when he was going through a divorce and thought he would get a break away to America with the woman he would later marry. Of course he travelled during a Celtic convention and was caught on a plane with Bertie and a few other Lions as well as a hoard of Celtic supporters. Ally thought he would be funny and try on the humour with Bertie and co. It didn’t last long as wee Ten-Thirty stung him back with a cracker.

When the flight landed the pilot came over the intercom to thank the passengers in the usual monologue. Then, just as he was about to sign off the pilot said: ‘On behalf of Bertie Auld and the Lisbon Lions, we wish Ally McCourt and his daughter all the best for a memorable stay in New York!’

Vintage Bertie.

Sutton’s story about Bertie involves a golf day for Stiliyan Petrov’s Foundation, when Bertie needed a player for his team so asked Chris’ son Olly to make up the shortfall of players. He duly did and at the end of the game they had a drink and just before Bertie left he said to Olly that he should give him a call when he comes back up to Glasgow. Olly was delighted and asked: ‘What, really?’, to which Bertie said: ‘Just call, I’ll make sure I won’t be in, I’ll be in Belfast!’

He truly was the best of us all.

God Bless, Bertie.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
