Celtic: A Family at War – “Heartbroken”, “Not fighting for each other”, “Hanging one man out to dry”

Plenty has been said last night and throughout the day on the aftermath to Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County yesterday. It’s almost certainly Neil Lennon’s last match in charge of the club as we expect that he will no longer be the Celtic manager by tomorrow lunchtime.

The Celtic Board will be looking at candidates and do not be surprised if someone like the Hibs boss Jack Ross is not very high up the list of potential replacements.

Meanwhile here’s some of various comments from celebrity supporter Rod Stewart and various former players, excluding Kris Commons as we didn’t have the stomach to look through what he’s been saying. We have already reported on what Chris Sutton, John Hartson and Andy Walker have had to say.

“HEARTBROKEN AND DISGUSTED,” ROD STEWART

“I’m heartbroken and disgusted,” Rod Stewart told TalkSport. “All my years of supporting the Celts I’ve never seen anything like that, missiles being thrown at the players, it’s shameful it makes the club look so irresponsible.

“It’s a proud old club and I’m absolutely heartbroken not only with the result yesterday but all round. Unless there is someone lined up to take Lenny’s place I don’t think anybody would take it with a bargepole, I really wouldn’t.

“Taking over Celtic, halfway through the season, 11 points behind Rangers, it’s got to take a tough man to do it.

“I would let Lenny finish the season, I still think he can turn it around. More players have got to come in. But I am shocked, shocked, shocked. I don’t think there’s anyone who can take his place. I don’t think the guy from Bournemouth would touch it, I really don’t.”

“HANGING ONE MAN OUT TO DRY,” GARY CALDWELL

“If you cut him open he would have green and white blood. It runs through his veins. The club song is ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ yet at this moment in time a small minority are hanging one man out to dry,” Gary Caldwell told Sky Sports.

“I think the whole club needs to take responsibility for the situation the team finds themselves in at the minute. It is a bit of an obsession to get Ten- in-a-Row. Celtic have to try and get away from that and focus more on the process of winning games.”

“IT’S THE REACTION FROM THE PLAYERS THAT HAS SHOCKED ME,” PAT BONNER

“If it wasn’t Ten-in-a-Row and all of that in the background then every manager deserves to go through a period when things aren’t going well but it’s the reaction from the players that has shocked me.

“Huge disappointment, these are well paid players, the fans have paid their season tickets this year to back the club. The basic technical ability has gone from them, their work rate has gone, their attitude looks like they’re not fighting for each other. There are so many things wrong at the moment,” Pat Bonner told BBC Sportsound.

“It was the same against Hibs at times. The one basic thing in my time was hard work, putting the effort in. For me, you’ve got to point the finger at the players, put Kris Ajer into that as well. He was one that there was talk of leaving the club and going to something big, but it looks as if he is not interested at times.

“He is a young man and had such great times and Celtic put him into that position that teams are looking at him. That’s the issue at the moment, a group of players we were praising when they were performing and wiping every team off the face off the earth but now they’ve gone so far back it’s incredible.

“It’s going to be very difficult for him to stay in a job and I do feel sorry for him because he is Celtic through and through. The players responded to him when he came back after Brendan Rodgers left but they’re not responding to him now.

“When you’re in a crisis like this, the longer you let it go it’s almost the worse it becomes and you have to make decisions.”

“YOU HAVE NO PRIDE OR RESPECT FOR THE CLUB,” RAMON VEGA

“I can’t repeat myself again and again, players you are embarrassing. YOU have no pride or respect for the club! I don’t care if you play for the coach or not but you are playing for Celtic, once you have that shirt on you have a responsibility on your shoulders,” former Celtic Treble winner Ramon Vega tweeted.
