Celtic could sign highly rated French prospect for free after he rejects a new contract

It must be frustrating for a club to develop a youngster only to see them leave on a free transfer when they are on the cusp of breaking into the first team, but that’s just how the game works just now.

Celtic have shown a willingness to take chances on youngsters from other youth systems and give them a chance, and it seems like Montpellier’s Thomas Robert is the latest to be linked.

The surname is familiar as his father Laurent had a successful career down south, but a report from Football Insider has indicated that Celtic could land him for free this Summer.

They state that he’s rejected a new deal from the French side and Celtic have now been alerted due to his potential and the fact they could get him for free.

He’s not actually played for the senior side, but they suggest that he’s been training with the senior team all season.

On top of that they also suggest that his English is fluent and he’s actually looking for a move to Britain when his contract expires, so this could work out well.

It’s hard to tell how good a player he would actually be, there’s not a lot of video evidence but he is the prospect of a very successful youth system.

Montpellier have produced Remy Cabella, Benjamin Stambouli, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Younnes Belhanda, Ellyes Skhiri and Nicolas Cozza in recent years – with all going on to play at a high level.

At this point it does sound like he’s highly rated, so it would be interesting to see how he fared if he does make the move.
