Celtic supporters in the 25,000 crowd go home happy from Hampden, having seen their team beat Third Lanark 3-0 to win the Glasgow Cup. Jimmy Quinn, Peter Somers and Jimmy McMenemy are the scorers in what turns out to be an easy victory over last year’s Scottish Cup winners.
SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER 1916
Celtic win the Glasgow Cup for the second year running when they beat Clyde 3-2 in the final played at Celtic Park. The game is in fact easier for Celtic than it sounds, for Clyde’s second goal comes in the 89th minute. Peter Johnstone and Johnny McMaster are both playing for Celtic, on leave from the forces and listed as “Private Johnstone” and “Private McMaster”. Celtic’s goals come from Johnny Browning , Joe O’Kane and Joe Dodds. The popularity of wartime football is shown by the large crowd of 30,000.

A thrilling Glasgow Derby today at Celtic Park as Celtic beat Partick Thistle 4-3 with two goals from Patsy Gallacher, one from “Jean” McFarlane and one from Joe Cassidy. Possibly Thistle deserved a draw, for Celtic were indebted to Patsy Gallacher’s late penalty for their victory. Many fans were plunged into grief today with the news of the death of Marie Lloyd, the famous singer who was known as “the Queen of the Music Hall”.

Today’s trip to Hampden was like no other. The country had been at war for over a month, and football had been suspended. It had now started again, albeit on a more limited and restricted basis. Today was a Glasgow Cup game against Queen’s Park. It was a replay following last week’s 2-2 draw at Parkhead. In a surreal atmosphere before a limited crowd of 7,000, Celtic play very poorly and lose 0-1.

Things have taken a turn for the better of late, and Celtic are now in the Scottish League Cup final. Tonight a competent performance at Parkhead sees a 3-0 win over Portuguese side Leixoes whom they drew with a fortnight ago in Portugal. They have thus qualified for the next round of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup thanks to two good goals from Steve Chalmers and a penalty from Bobby Murdoch.

No-one would ever have believed that Celtic could beat both AC Milan and Gretna in the space of four days with both winners coming late from Scott McDonald. One of the lesser spotted Celts of this period Chris Killen scores Celtic’s other goal against Gretna today, but in fact it is a poor performance from Gordon Strachan’s side, and once could argue that Gretna played better than AC Milan did. This game is actually played at Fir Park Motherwell because Raydale Park, Gretna was not considered suitable for Premier League football.
