Celtic star Carl Starfelt sent home from Sweden camp

Carl Starfelt has been sent home from Sweden’s UEFA Nations League camp and will miss their remaining fixtures in the competition this month. Starfelt went down injured before the half-time whistle had even went against Slovenia on Thursday night. The news was the last thing Ange Postecoglou and the Celtic fans wanted to hear.

It has now been widely reported by various media outlets that the defender has been relieved of his national team duties and sent home. Record Sport have been one of the mainstream media organisations to have covered this, stating the defender will go back to Scotland to be assessed by the team at Lennoxtown in the coming days.

The big Swede will now miss out on a double header with former Celt Moi Elyonoussi and his superstar pal Erling Haaland as Sweden prepare to take on Norway. There is also a home match with Serbia in the next nine days or so which he will also take no part in as of today.

Starfelt spoke after the dust had settled on an unfortunate situation last night. The Celtic defender said:

“I felt a stabbing pain in my back so I had to go off. Of course it’s not fun, especially not when you get the chance to play and you want to take your opportunity.

“But sometimes it’s like that in football, I have to see now what kind of injury it is.
We’ll see what it is, but it does not look very bright. If I am lucky, the X-ray may not show anything and I can recover in a few days, but right now I do not see it as very likely.”

His national team coach, Janne Andersson, also lamented the loss of Carl, insisting it was disappointing to lose a key cog. He said: “It is a problematic situation. He is a very important part of the team. Even he does not have experience, you want a centre back you are used to.”

Hopefully when Carl is back home and given the look over by the medical team it’s not as bad as the stretcher and initial pain suggested. Thankfully this summer we don’t have to endure the arduous rounds of Russian roulette in the trecherous landscape of Champions League qualification. That, we can leave to our friends across town!

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
