Celtic will reward Liam Scales with a long-term contract after his impressive start to the season. The Irish Internationalist benefitted from an injury crisis along Brendan Rodgers’ backline to cement his place in the starting XI alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that talks will take place between the club and Scales’ representatives as Celtic look to reward the 25-year-old for his confident displays at the back.
“It’s something that I’m sure the club and his representative will look at.
“It doesn’t sit well with me when players are going down to the final stages of contracts. I think you only need to look at the fact that I’ve chosen him to play very consistently in games.
“There are also players back now fit that are pushing him but he’s still performing to a high level.
“As I said to him, it’s about consistency. Keep showing that you can be consistent and stay focused. But there’s no doubt that he’s stepped in and done really well.”
Signed from Shamrock Rovers in the summer of 2021, Scales took a while to get going under Ange Postecoglou, being given minutes in the left back berth. His second season saw a loan move to Aberdeen on a loan deal; however, it was expected that this deal would be made permanent this summer.
The Scottish Champions signed Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Nat Phillips (loan) to compete with Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales to partner Carter-Vickers in the heart of the Celtic defence. One defender will likely be moved on but Scales is expected to pen a new deal after impressing in games in Europe and in the win at Ibrox, since he came into the team really.
“When the [Champions League] music goes off, it actually gets drowned out by the noise of the fans.” 🗣🎶
