Celtic v Hearts: Where are the lads who stood with me, when history was made?

Neil Lennon has pretty much confirmed what all already know anyway, that the Celtic talisman Odsonne Edouard will lead the line at Hampden today in the 2020 Christmas time Scottish Cup Final as Celtic attempt to achieve something that no club anywhere has ever achieved by winning four consecutive trebles.

Twelve consecutive trophy wins would be truly remarkable and while we have won the last nine league titles – that is something that Celtic have already done, the only Scottish club still operating to have achieved that. But a Quadruple Treble is completely unheard of and we’re unlikely to ever be in the position Celtic find themselves in today – even when the players took to the park in Lisbon on 25 May 1967 to play in a European Cup Final that was not going to be a unique situation For Celtic – the team was back in another final three years later.

But the Celtic team today will be the ONLY one ever have a chance to complete a Quadruple Treble. Let by BBC Scotland, the media are already attempting to dismiss this as an irrelevance and suggesting that even Celtic Supporters are thinking along similar lines.

The biggest frustration in all of this is the Celtic support will be absent today – as we have been all season due to this awful pandemic. ‘Where are the lads who stood with me, when history was made?” @paulthetim asked on social media this morning, obviously as frustrated as the rest of us that we aren’t able to be at Hampden and support the team and hopefully witness History being made, the best kind of history…CELTIC history.

“These occasions bring out the best in Odsonne. He is a big-game player,” the Celtic manager said at his Media Conference. “That’s a great thing to have and it speaks volumes for his character, as you forget how young he is. He is quality and a real talismanic figure for us.

“If he is on song, then we have a real chance of winning the Scottish Cup. Like the majority of the players at the minute, he misses the fans in the stadium at the moment. He’s an entertainer at the end of the day.

“But he’s in a good position mentally and physically and, like the others, he’s had a good record in this competition. We are all looking for more of the same in this final.

“But I’m not going to put all the spotlight on Odsonne as we have quality elsewhere too. Mohamed Elyounoussi is in great scoring form and is a threat from the wide areas.

The fans came in their thousands

“Ryan Christie, Tom Rogic, David Turnbull . . . they are all match-winners on the day as well. We also have two big threats from set-pieces in Chris Jullien and Shane Duffy.

“No matter who scores the goals, we are just looking for a consistency in performance. We have experienced players who have been over the course and distance before and that will help on Sunday.”
