CELTIC’S SCOTTISH CUP FINAL VICTORIES – Number 40…CELTIC 3-3 HEARTS – (Celtic won 4-3 on penalties) HAMPDEN, 20 DECEMBER 2020 – The strangest Cup final of them all! Played in front of an empty stadium because of the Covid restrictions in mid-winter, Celtic won their quadruple treble in a game from which Hearts emerged with a lot of credit.
Celtic had struggled all season, and were already out of the League Cup (which meant that there could be no quintuple treble). They were 2-0 up at half time with goals from Ryan Christie and a penalty from Odsonne Edouard, then Hearts fought back to make it 2-2. Extra time saw both teams score (Leigh Griffiths scoring for Celtic) and although Celtic came very close near the end, the game went to penalty kicks.
Celtic’s hero was Conor Hazard who saved two penalties, and Griffiths, McGregor, Johnston and Ajer did the job to win the 40th Scottish Cup and to gain the quadruple treble for season 2019/20. It was the first time that Celtic had won the Scottish Cup on a penalty shoot-out.
The Celtic team was: Hazard, Ajer, Jullien, Duffy (Johnston), Taylor (Frimpong), Brown (Soro), McGregor, Christie, Turnbull (Rogic), Elyounoussi (Laxalt), Edouard (Griffiths).
