‘Delighted to be here,’ Tony Watt signs for Motherwell

MOTHERWELL have completed the signing of the former Celtic striker Tony Watt until the end of the season. Watt, famous of course for scoring THAT goal against Barcelona in the Champions League in November 2012, joins the Fir Park side as a free agent after his recent release from his contract at CSKA Sofia.

In recent years Watt has played for a number of clubs in Europe, England and Scotland – where he has turned out for both Hearts and St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership and now the Coatbridge Bhoy is back in Lanarkshire where it all began for him playing for Airdrie.

Tony Watt took in Motherwell’s game against his old club Celtic on Wednesday night and despite the eventual scoreline – Motherwell 0 Celtic 4 – he would have been impressed by the performance of his new teammates, particularly in the first half when they went toe to toe with the Champions and League leaders and made a real game of it.

The official Motherwell FC website confirmed this morning that the deal had been done and Tony Watt was now their player, until at least the end of the season.

The site stated that the 26-year-old bolsters the team’s attacking options for the remainder of the campaign, signing on a free transfer after leaving CSKA Sofia, where he scored five goal, in January and revealed that Watt joined the squad for a training stint on Monday and has quickly impressed to be offered a contract.

They note that the move is subject to international clearance from the Bulgarian FA, which obviously should not be a problem.

“Tony is a player who maybe has a little bit of a point to prove,” Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson stated. “We lost James Scott at the last second of the window. So being able to bring a player of Tony’s experience in on a short-term deal is a big boost for us.

“He will bring us another option in attack as we look to secure a top six place and push on.”

All Celtic Supporters will want to wish Tony all the best for his time at Fir Park and hopefully he’ll manage to score a goal or two against you know who. He’ll certainly try his best!
