Former Celtic star Kyogo completes transfer to EFL Championship

Former Celtic star Kyogo has completed a move to Birmingham City. The Japanese star has agreed a three year deal to end his time in Ligue 1 with Rennes…

Chris Davies’ Blues will be eager to earn promotion to the Premier League but the Championship is a difficult league to get out of.

With Tomoki Iwata in their ranks, US-backed Birmingham will be delighted to have landed a player or Kyogo’s quality. A move to the Championship represents a fall from grace for Kyogo and he must wonder how he’s ended up here.

Last summer, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Pep Guardiola’s Man City were considering the Japanese striker with a fee of £15m suggested for the player. No move came to fruition but a number of links followed, suggesting that the player was keen on an exit.

Kyogo was signed by Celtic in 2021 as one of Ange Postecoglou’s first since assuming control at Celtic Park. It was an inspired signing and the striker would net 85 goals and assist 19 times across 165 appearances for Celtic.

  1. This is a better move for him than his last one for sure!
Leaving Celtic was clearly not well thought through! But it was clear he wasn’t too happy for a while.
This is however the second big step down in just over six months for him.
The upside is he will score goals for fun with the leaky defences in the English Championship and almost certainly lead them to promotion.
How long they’ll stay up in the EPL, I don’t know. But as long as he doesn’t play like he’s too good to be playing there, he’s going to get them up.
The big come-downs in levels of club are after all his own doing!
I hope he lights it up!
