Greg Taylor contract renewal a real priority for Celtic, says Brendan Rodgers

After answering questions about Alistair Johnston’s potentially being offered a new and improved contract extension at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers then responded to a query about whether there’s been any development on Greg Taylor’s contract, with the left-back now in the last year of his current deal…

And the Celtic manager made it very clear that he wants this sorted out quickly and for Taylor to remain at the club.

“No update. I really hope that we can get something organised on that,” the Celtic manager said at today’s media conference ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Hearts at a sold-out Celtic Park. “He’s a fantastic player for us, how he makes that position work, how we want it to look, he’s first class.

“He knows we really want him to stay and hopefully between his representatives and the club, we can organise that because he is a player that I really rate. I’ve seen him grow here from the outside looking in and obviously having the chance to work with him now for over a season.

“I really like everything about Greg. I love his personality, I love his spirit, I love how he plays the game of course. He plays the game like a midfield player coming from that outside position in, so he really makes it difficult for the opposition.

“He’s technically strong for what we could say smaller in stature, he competes in his duels, he wins headers, so he does a lot of really good things in games which I really like and really appreciate.

“I really hope that we can tie him down in this period now. That would be a real priority for us to try and get something sorted for him.”

Brendan Rodgers was speaking at his pre-match media conference at Lennoxtown earlier today.

  1. Very clever answer from Rodgers, especially with being a master of deflection also?
Placing the current contract situation into the hands of Taylor and the club is a masterstroke from Rodgers imo?
For Taylor himself, he would possibly want to know what Rodgers plans are regarding whether he will be regarded as a 1st choice LB?
Such a decision could well effect just how big of a contract, the club are willing to offer?
And that’s without knowing if Taylor might even fancy a new challenge elsewhere also?
Still think that the majority of our support believe that Taylor is worthy of a new contract, especially as he has earned the right for one?
Yet could well be what game time is available for Taylor will influence his decision more so imo?
For Rodgers himself, course he would prefer an answer sooner than not, especially as we have already seen Rodgers doesn’t seem to waste much time upon player’s, who don’t really want to be here, as we seen over the summer period?
Regardless of the potential outcome, Taylor has shown a fantastic professional attitude, and hope his stay was to continue with ourselves?
Yet, do I believe that Taylor should remain as our 1st choice LB for the longer term?
Not as easy of a question to answer, all the same?
