‘It is done’, ex-Celt concedes title race after Glasgow Derby defeat

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has claimed that the title race is over after Rangers beat Celtic 1-0 at Ibrox earlier today. Sutton, who knew exactly how to lift trophies by winning eight in his six years at Paradise, claims that despite the determination of the squad and their winning know-how, the title race is over.

You could hear the deflation of the green side of Glasgow when the full-time whistle went. I think to many, Bobby Madden’s last peep of the afternoon meant one thing in terms of the general consensus; it really had sunk in just how big of a task it would now be to reclaim the Premiership title for the tenth time. An almost unclimbable mountain would need to be scaled in order to make history, and today’s exploits are the biggest signs yet that it would take a miracle.

It is an alien season for Celtic, to say the least; having won at least one piece of silverware in every season bar two since the turn of the century, it is almost unfathomable to think that the Scottish Cup is Celtic’s only likely reprieve – especially after winning the infamous quadruple-treble.

Sutton said on BT Sport Score: “The truth is that it (the title) was done before today’s game. I think Celtic may take encouragement from the performance which is a slight consolation – but ultimately they lost the game and they’ve lost the league this season.”

“It has come about on the basis of having an outstanding goalkeeper and a really solid back-line. When they were under pressure in the first half they saw it through – and Celtic’s set-piece failures were the reason it happened.”

“It is done.”

Obviously, you needn’t have doom and gloom where possible in times of turmoil, but Sutton has clearly outlined his verdict.

Celtic can still win the league but it would take an enormous effort as well as relying on Rangers to drop points. Anything can happen in football.
