Opinion: There’s an obvious alternative to Fraser Forster if a deal cannot be agreed with Southampton

They often say a player should never go back as they won’t live up to expectations, but Fraser Forster has proven to be the difference so many times this season – especially in Europe.

You never really understand how important it is to have a solid goalkeeper until you suddenly don’t have one, so sorting out that position should be a main priority this Summer.

The operation to sign Forster permanently could be difficult, but it’s hard to tell if the current financial situation will help or hinder Celtic.

On one hand they might struggle to come up with  a big fee or the wages, but it’s also possible that Southampton will be desperate to get him off the books, so it’s a situation worth watching.

As always, it’s important to have an alternative if things don’t work out, and there’s an obvious player to target who has a very similar past to Forster.

Newcastle just refuse to give young keepers a chance, and Freddie Woodman is the latest in that chain to follow in Forster’s footsteps in leaving to establish himself.

Woodman has gone through a series of loan spells including time with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, but he’s firmly established himself at Swansea this season.

He’s played in the occasional cup game for Newcastle but that’s it, and their Premier League status is far too important to them to take a chance on a youngster at an important position.

He’s a solid all round keeper who can also use his feet, so he certainly looks like a capable replacement, while the example that Forster has set should inspire him too.

Of course we should hope that a deal can be struck with Southampton, but this alternative also makes a lot of sense if needed.
