The dangers of being ‘Cute’ for The Celtic Trust and our “pretty phenomenal” problem

Chris Sutton has outlined the extremely difficult task that faces Celtic that has to begin today with three points against Kilmarnock to kickstart a pretty much 100% points gathering exercise in the Premiership if Celtic are to achieve the historic Ten-in-a-Row. And he is not happy at thought of a protest happening before today’s game nor with some of the banners that have appeared so far most notably the “Shoot the Board” one. Presumably he’s not seen the new ‘PLC Scum’ one that was hanging from the fences outside Celtic Park yesterday afternoon.

“In what possible way can a demonstration before a vital league match be a positive move in any way shape or form?” Sutton stated in his Daily Record column yesterday. “How on earth does a banner saying, ‘Shoot the Board’ do anything apart from absolutely tarnish the hard won reputation of the Celtic support in the eyes of the football world.”

The Englishman recognises that it will be a difficult task for Neil Lennon to secure the title this season given Celtic’s faltering form so far and also the impressive levels of consistency from Steven Gerrard’s side. Celtic effectively have to beat them three times and win all games against the other sides in the league if Sutton’s close friend Neil Lennon is to turn his own season around and secure the title.

Indeed Celtic go into today’s game against Kilmarnock having dropped down to THIRD in the table after Hibs won at Hamilton yesterday. There are simply no room for slip-ups and three pints are essential from the group of Celtic players who will have to arrive at the stadium driving past an ill-conceived Fans Protest that was organised by Celtic Trust before the 3-2 win against Lille on Thursday night.

The Trust want Celtic fans to give them funds- ideally 50,000 supporters giving them £10 per month –  to buy shares in Celtic yet there are banners at the ground saying ‘PLC Scum’ – the only word missing there is Celtic.  That money would go to buying shares in Celtic…PLC and having used to fans money to buy out existing shareholders in the PLC…what next for the now fans owed PLC?

Each to their own but like many fans I’m uncomfortable with this protest that was announced by the Trust saying that they had liaised with Celtic and the Police before announcing today’s socially distanced protest. Celtic (PLC) then stated that they had NOT spoken to the Trust about this nor had agreed to it happening and both the club and the police asked fans not to gather outside the ground ahead of today’s game.

The Trust were being ‘cute’ someone stated on social media and their initial statement sounded more like an activist ground with an agenda and not one that really needs to earn the ‘trust’ of the support.  The implication from the initial statement was misleading in that it implied that both the club and police were agreeing to this protest…when all The Trust did was send both an email.

In law parties are allowed to keep each other at arms length in commercial matters but in some instances – like for example in insurance matters – the standards are higher and parties must act with the utmost good faith (uberrimae fidei). It’s probably fair to state that The Celtic Trust reached the first standard but not the second in their communication with the Celtic support this week over their planned Protest and that hardly builds the necessary levels of ‘trust’ that they are going to need if they are to achieve their objectives. Did they provide the support with a full and accurate picture of the situation when they announced today’s protest?

Earlier in the week we mentioned that on a few occasions Celtic fans turned to YNWA to influence difficult situations for the club and suggested that for the ptotest today supporters should consider raising their scarfs above their heads so they can hold heads up high.

Speaking on BBC5Live the former Celtic striker Chris Sutton admitted that it would now be very difficult for his old club to win the league this season, given the run of form that Steven Gerrard’s side have achieved so far in both domestic competitions and indeed in the Europa League this season where the former Liverpool’s captain’s record is described as “pretty phenomenal”.

“It’s his third season at Rangers and he’s never going to have a more difficult job in football than when he first took over at Rangers who were trailing Celtic.

“This season, I mean is the league over? It’s nearly over. Celtic need to perform miracles to get back in the race, and that’s a credit to him and the way he has set the team up.

“This season defensively the way he has set the team up is so strong, especially domestically, and his European record is pretty phenomenal.”

The Celtic fightback begins today.
