Celtic legend Martin O’Neill heads back to Nottingham Forest

MARTIN O’NEILL is set to be appointed manager of Nottingham Forest later today.

The former Celtic manager, who recently left his role as manager of Ireland, will return to the City Ground where he is a double European Cup winning legend.

O’Neill was part of the fabulous Brian Clough side that won the European Cup back to back in 1979 and 1980.

The 66 year old legend played 371 games for Forest and was voted into the club’s greatest ever 11 back in 2016.

Clough’s side came up from the old second division at the end of the 1970s and won the league in their first season in the top tier. They followed that up with two European Cup wins.

After his playing career O’Neill started in management at Wycombe and succeeded in getting them promoted into the English Football League.

He moved to Leicester City and won the League Cup there before taking the Celtic job in 2000. He led Celtic to three league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup – and memorably all the way to the Uefa Cup Final in Seville in May 2003.

He spent 5 years as Ireland boss but now returns to club management at the club where it all began for the Irishman.

Forest are currently sitting in ninth spot in the Championship and are four points out with a play-off spot. The experienced O’Neill will be looking to bring some stability to the City Ground where there have been ten managers in the manager’s job since 2011.

Here is Martin, at the peak of his powers, being interviewed at Anfield after Celtic beat Liverpool 2-0 to progress to the UEFA Cup semi-final.
