Forgotten Celtic loanee Gustaf Lagerbielke has received a call-up to represent Sweden this month after his stand-out season at FC Twente…

The centre-back moved to Eredivisie side FC Twente on loan last summer. After joining Celtic in 2023, Lagerbielke struggled to settle in Glasgow, but he has been highly impressive in the Netherlands since his move.

Indeed, his standout performances have garnered enough attention for former Malmo boss Jon Dahl Tomasson to include Lagerbielke in Sweden’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland later this month.
The 24-year-old has earned two caps for his country in his career to date, with one goal to his name. Lagerbielke will be aiming to build on those numbers in the coming weeks.

FC Twente has no option to buy this summer as Celtic will look to maximise transfer fee
However, his future with Celtic after the season concludes is still uncertain. Twente does not have an option to buy the Swede once his loan at the club ends, and there are still huge doubts about whether he will be a long-term solution for Brendan Rodgers in the centre of Celtic’s defence.
Similarly to Odin Thiago Holm, Luis Palma, Stephen Welsh and other current loanees, the expectation is that it will be highly unlikely Lagerbielke will ever play in a Celtic shirt again.
Former Celtic defender Carl Starfelt is also named in the Sweden squad.
