“Don’t Bother Coming Back,” Postecoglou Jokes after Pittodrie Triumph

After today’s crucial 2-1 victory in the Granite City against Aberdeen, who like ourselves have had an underwhelming opening to the season, Ange Postecoglou gave fans a glimpse of his dead pan humour in his post match interview.

When he was asked whether the International break was coming at a good time. He told Sky Sports: “The last break wasn’t really kind to me,” Ange stated.  “I’ve said to the players, if you get injured on international duty, don’t bother coming back. The disruption we’ve gone through with injuries has made it really difficult for us. It’s crucial we get through the break without any other injuries.”

Although the ‘dont bother coming back’ line was obviously done tongue in cheek losing more players to injury over the next week will definitely be playing on the managers mind. Having lost our only in form striker Kyogo Furuhashi during the last break when he was unfortunately injured while playing for Japan against China, Ange will surely be spending the international break praying all our players can come through it unscathed.

Regarding today’s vital 3 points Postecoglou was delighted to see his players battle to a win after being pegged back through what seemed a stroke of luck on Lewis Ferguson’s side when the ball seemed to come off his shoulder and loop over Adam Montgomery on the goalpost.

Postecoglou went on: “Everyone is well aware of our struggles away from home going back to last year. I think the manner in which we did it showed tremendous character to get ourselves back in front after they equalised.

“The players were searching for the winner, they weren’t going to settle for a point. If there is one thing about us this year, we have definitely shown that when we play well we can definitely take it to teams.

“There have been games when we have scored a lot of goals and played really well but the one thing we haven’t shown yet is that ability to find a way to win a game when we need it.

“It’s not just the victory, it’s the manner in which we went about it.

“It was a tough second half. They are desperate for a result as well, particularly here with the crowd behind them. It wasn’t easy for our players to respond to that but the fact we did respond to it, and the manner in which we did, that should give the players plenty of confidence.

It was also great to see Ange celebrate with the Celtic fans at the end of the match, showing everyone how much the win means to him. Talking about the fans he said:

“The fans have been patient with us so far, they can see what we are trying to do. We haven’t really rewarded them, particularly away from home. I’m pleased for our fans that they enjoyed the trip up here and they will enjoy the trip home. They saw today not only that we can play good football, but there is character in this team to get results when we need them.”

Hailing from Cushendall in the North of Ireland my formative years were spent watching Celtic during our barren spell through the 90's which meant I have appreciated our recent trophy-laden spell even more. Favourite matches home and away I've attended has to be beating Man Utd 1-0 at Celtic Park and being with my 2 brothers watching us beat Lazio 2-1 in Rome. Best away day experience? Has to be Munich with friends from Coatbridge...what a few days!
