Open Goal: “Why doesn’t someone give me an opportunity?” Ange on his Kewell logic

Revealed: The real reasoning behind the introduction of Harry Kewell to Ange’s coaching team at Celtic…

In this latest interview with the Celtic manager – OPEN GOAL MEETS… ANGE POSTECOGLOU! Glen’s Vodka SPFL Manager Of The Season – Ange explains the logic in bringing in the former Leeds United and Liverpool star and fellow Australian to his coaching staff this summer.

The Aussie-born coach comes from a bundle of experience as a player, playing for the likes of Leeds United, Liverpool and the Australian National team. Kewell is still regarded as one of the best football exports from Australia.

Kewell also has experience playing in and winning the Champions League, playing in the  final with Liverpool in 2005 against AC Milan in Istanbul. He also helped Leeds United reach the semi-final of the champions league in 2001.

Even though his playing career is littered  with achievements, his coaching career set off on a somewhat rocky path and it seemed he was just falling short of getting the opportunity to really prove himself. That was an  opportunity that Ange Postecoglou was happy to provide. The Celtic manager opened up on the similarities he shares with the former Socceroos legend, as he waited for someone to give him an opportunity to properly establish himself as a coach

Ange explained: “I kind of keep tabs on different coaches; young coaches in particular,” Ange told the Open Goal boys. “I knew that I believed in myself, so I thought, why doesn’t someone give me an opportunity? It was just a bit of luck and circumstances that I got an opportunity to coach again, and since then, my careers gone off.

“I thought, you know what, there could be other people like me out there. So, I’m always scanning to see, I follow as manager young managers as possible, see they’re going. And it’s not about them having success. Harry, if you look at him, he’s really wanted to have a crack at having a career, and he’s done some really tough gigs three or four times.

“It hasn’t worked out for him, and watching him from afar, talking to people; they said look, he’s got plenty of energy, great enthusiasm and great knowledge. He just needs to be in a good environment. So, I thought you know what, bring him in here, he’ll add what he’s got, because he has played at the highest level, won a Champions League

“But, then also he can develop working alongside some good coaches here, in a good environment. I’ve always been big on because it happened to me; there was a period in my career where I couldn’t get an opportunity, and I thought, ‘mate, it’s just not right’.

“Funnily enough, and ahead of the Champions League draw, Ange stated that his father was a Real Madrid supporter, while in the 1970s Ange himself supported Liverpool. Ange was attracted to the attacking style and talent of players such as former Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish.

The introduction of the former Liverpool winger is a perfect addition to the squad as they prepare to embark on their Champions league run. Ange also stated that he has a real fasicnation with wingers, and that they are they key to breaking down defences and exploiting gaps. The introduction of some real experience to guide the lies of Jota, Abada, Maeda and new signing Sead Hakšabanović as well as James Forrest will surely bring a real improvement to the Celtic wide players.

“Overall, Ange has given Kewell the perfect opportunity to develop his coaching career at Celtic while bringing in invaluable experience of playing and winning at a higher level of club football.  We will have to wait to see the results of his work, and to see if Ange’s decision to bring in Kewell pays off but you just sense it has been yet another smart move from the manager that Celtic fans are calling The Australian Stein.
