‘Peter Lawwell has earned £11,320,000 at Celtic,’ Price of Football

PRICE OF FOOTBALL has tweeted this regarding Celtic CEO Peter Lawwell’s earnings while in his current role at the club.

“Since joining Celtic in October 2003 CEO Peter Lawwell has earned £11,320,000 from the club. Pay rose from £166,000 for the period to June 2004 to £1,167,000 last year.”

He clarified that the first year was for the period October 2003 to June 2004, so wasn’t a full twelve months.

A few of the following comments…

“You could make a case, in terms of the money he has brought into the club, with a very successful signing strategy (VVD, Fraser Forster, Wanyama, etc.) but it’s a lot of money.”

“How much of recruitment is down to him is arguable. The club makes money and has a zero net spend policy over many years which is impressive although lack of competition domestically helps.”

“Probably not involved in targeting individual players, but I suspect he’s behind the strategy of finding talented 22 year olds, developing them, and selling them to Southampton 2 years later for a 400% mark-up!”

“Salary is big but what did he inherit and what is the market value to secure similar person. I don’t know all the answers but as a overview look at where we are; ground improvements, manager, plans for hotel, reputation, etc. There are negatives also. I’m proud of our club.”

“Thoroughly deserves it. Doing a great job but needs to help Brendan out big time next window.”

“Think Dermot knows more about paying £1m+ wages than most folk on here. He’s the best CEO in the UK and knocked back arsenal who were offering him £4m/year at the time.”

“Worth every penny, when Peter talks rest of Europe listens. We count ourselves lucky to have Peter there doing this job as he’s better than almost everyone else. Given the handicap of how the world views Scottish football.”

“Money that could have been used to get McGinn.”

“How he survives on that only God knows.”
