Transfer Latest – Celtic watching Jupiler League left-back Matthew Sorinola

Wales Online have reported that Celtic are watching former MK Dons left-back Matthew Sorinola. The 21-year-old fullback has been the subject of interest from various club’s including old manager Russell Martin’s Swansea City. Newly-demoted Norwich City were also name-checked by Wales Online as one who were observing the youngster.

Sorinola is now plying his trade in the Belgian Jupiler League with Union Saint-Gilloise and it has been stated he could decide to stay where he is for the moment. However, his current boss Felice Mazzù looks set to take over as Anderlecht coach, as is expected Vincent Kompany makes the move to Burnley in the English Chamionship.

Here lies the twist in the tale, as Kompany could opt to take the promising defender to Turf Moor with him as he departs the Belgian top flight for the English second tier. Having already experienced the cut and thrust of English football, Sorinola may be tempted to take up the offer to join up with a rival boss in the country of his birth.

With Celtic in the market for a left-back, this link could hold water. Boli Bolingoli looks a certainty to leave the club this summer, and with Liam Scales struggling for meaningful game time it wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest Ange might be looking long-term for that part of the team. The question would be whether or not Sorinola could be ready to displace Greg Taylor straight from the off, with Celtic linked with more experienced players with higher pedigree recently.

However, you just never know what Ange Postecoglou might have up his sleeve when it comes to Celtic signings. I think most of those players who are now stalwarts were not on the radar of many and now look at where we sit. League and Cup double winners, who will return to the Champions League group stage next season.

Who would have thought it?

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
