Craig Gordon has found it hard to make it into the Celtic side since the arrival of Fraser Forster on loan earlier this summer. At 36 years of age, the goalkeeper is not too keen on spending the twilight years of his career sitting on the bench and is looking for a move away from the Glasgow side In January.
Craig Gordon has enjoyed an incredible career. He has won 13 trophies, the SFWA Footballer of the Year on two occasions and entered the Scotland national football team roll of honour in 2017. And it is incredible that there were fears that his career could have been over almost a decade earlier.
Gordon’s injury struggles began during his time at Sunderland. Following a number of injuries he was released by the club and spent the next two years out of professional football due to his fitness issues. During this period he even admitted that he was considering becoming a football coach. It was in 2014 that he joined Celtic.
He has enjoyed a very successful career at Celtic since then. But after losing his place in the team to Scott Bain earlier and now even further down the pecking order after the arrival of Fraser Forster. But letting the veteran goalkeeper leave in January could turn out to be a mistake on the part of the Hoops.
Scott Bain is also injured at the moment and if Forster gets injured as well, Gordon is the last reliable option that Neil Lennon will have. The matter of the fact is that Fraser Forster is only on loan at Celtic and there is no guarantee that he will be staying beyond this season. In a perfect world, Celtic would manage to sign Gordon to a one year extension if they do not manage to agree a deal with Southampton. But unfortunately this is not a perfect world and we’ll have to see how things work out.
