Job done! ‘European football after Christmas as the target,’ Celtic Star

JAMES FORREST has been speaking about the frustration within the Celtic dressing room last night concerning the poorer than expected level of performance from the Scottish champions.

However, even if it takes a day or two, he knows that last night’s outcome is much better than playing well and being unlucky to go out, the usual Scottish way of being eliminated from tournaments.

Two pictures illustrate the contrast in the two stadiums last night, one in the eastern German city of Leipzig…

That’s RB Leipzig scoring by the way, to take the lead and it wouldn’t be long before Salzburg opened the scoring in Glasgow.

Look at their crowd – was the news of the Salzburg goals communicated from the fans to their players? Who knows but the atmosphere must have been next to non existent.

It was of course very cold. It was hardly shorts and t-shirts weather in the East End of Glasgow either.

But this is how things looked there…

Pretty damn spectacular. The Celtic players were certainly aware of the Rosenborg equaliser when it went in, because Parkhead ROARED.

Anyway back to Jamesy, who admitted that on the park at least it wasn’t the players’ finest hour and a half.

“It’s not good getting beat at home in Europe in front of your own fans,” he told the official website.

“We’re disappointed with the result and performance on the night, but in the next couple of days it will sink in that we’ve done enough over the six games to get through.

“Right from the start I don’t feel we did ourselves justice in the game so we’re disappointed with that.

“We’ll look closely at where we could improve. We never want to lose, especially in home in European competition, so we’ll want to address that ahead of the next round.

“That’s a while away, though, so we’ll recover for our game against Hibs at the weekend and after that, we can see what comes from the draw.

“The previous two games in the group were very positive results and good performances.

“That’s what got us through, our hard work over the course of the six games. We’ll look to carry that on into the next round.

“We’ll try and forget about the Salzburg game. The gaffer and coaches will watch it back to help us make the improvements.

“We set out to be in Europe after Christmas every year so to be able to do that two years running feels good. It’s great for the fans to have that and hopefully we can do better in the next round that we did last year.”
